Best & Marsh - The Perfect Match (Shows 1-4) | 22nd Jan 1988 - 18th March 1988 Tony Wilson hosted this eight part series, prompting George Best and Rodney Marsh to reminisce on two 1970's matches plucked from the archives in each half-hour programme. Although this was a non-networked Granada production, the footage was not exclusively concerned with North West clubs and some other region's screened it the following year. New Order provided the theme tune which was later released on the b-side of their single "Round and Round". The shows were themed as follows: Show 1. George & Rod, 2. Goalkeepers, 3. Great Teams: Derby & Leeds, 4. The Liverpool Years, 5. Local Derby's, 6. Goalscorers, 7. British Clubs in Europe, 8. The FA Cup. |

THE BIG MATCH - 21 Years Of London Football | Whichever team you follow, no-one can deny that the 21 years from 1968 to 1989 provided us with an incredible number of star players, sensational matches and headline-making news stories. Who could forget the brilliant play from the likes of Peter Osgood, Charlie George, Stan Bowles, Trevor Brooking and Glenn Hoddle? It was players such as these who made sure that London clubs have been involved throughout the years in so many nerve-tingling encounters. There was Chelsea's epic F.A. Cup victory over Leeds United; Arsenal's glorious double in 1971 and of course, the incredible Championship decider of 1989. Spurs dramatic UEFA Cup triumph on penalties over Anderlecht will live long in the memory and so will their epic F.A. Cup Final tussle against Manchester City. West Ham can look back with pride on a couple of truly marvellous F.A. Cup triumphs and QPR fans will recall with relish the stylish play of the mid 70's which took them to runners-up spot in the league. Millwall experienced First Division football - joining Wimbledon, whose meteoric rise from non-League status represents one of football's most amazing stories of all time. Packed with action, this dvd will bring back all the great memories from 21 years of London football. Narrated by Brian Moore. |

LEYTON ORIENT: YOURS FOR A FIVER | Orient: Club for a Fiver (AKA: Yours For A Fiver) was made by film student Jo Trehearne. The film follows the club during one of their worst seasons. On top of that the club also face financial difficulties. This film is a low budget film. There's shots were the camera goes out-of-focus and shots which are too brightly or dimly lit. The film is a fly on the wall documentary and is conventional in its style. The graphics used on the title sequences also look dated. With documentaries now featuring flashy graphics, fully composed scores and advanced editing techniques. Club for a fiver looks dated; fortunately this film is so well made and compelling that it isn't an issue. There's plenty of dramatic moments: The team fail to score in eight games (in a row) and Chairman Tony Wood's coffee business collapsing are two memorable dramatic moments. It also features joint manager John Sitton's legendary sweary changing room rants(which featured in Channel 4's 100 Greatest TV Moments From Hell). As far as I know Jo Trehearne has not directed another broadcast film but it is clear she has talent as a director. The films low budget shows but it adds to the realism. The footage captured and the unusual events make this film what it is. I'm not a fan of Leyton Orient but I think this is an excellent documentary that has rightfully deserved cult status among football fans. |

HILLSBOROUGH | This powerful ITV docu-drama charts the stories of those touched by the worst disaster ever to hit British football, when 96 people lost their lives. BARÇA: The Inside Story | Barca is a study of Barcelona Football Club from the inside, during one of its more traumatic years, 2003-2004. This is a film about the business of football - you will see the players but ultimately you spend far more time with the people who do the contracts, figure out whether the club is going bust or not, and show up to every match with a sense of pride that is usually reserved for bright children at school. Barca is a rarity among football clubs, in the sense that its members and fans are also its shareholders. It's run by an attractive oligarchy of forty-something Catalan businessmen. Watch the chorizo consumption in the film - see how the managerial class get fatter and fatter as the season goes on, and as Barca manages to rescue itself from disaster, becoming a first-rate club again. Wonderful. |

RIO's WORLD CUP WIND UPS | Rio's World Cup Wind-Ups was a short English hidden camera practical joke show hosted by English footballer Rio Ferdinand which was filmed shortly before the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The show strongly resembled the American show Punk'd which is hosted and produced by Ashton Kutcher. Ferdinand chose certain English footballers to play a prank on. Cops stop him and charge him for speeding and a number of traffic offences and proceed to detain Giggs and interrogate Neville. Ashley Cole: Cole is visiting a music recording studio for a charity deal. The sound engineer's American partner then accuses him of deleting the track vocal parts and messing things up. Shaun Wright-Phillips: Wright-Phillips accidentally gets an Albanian immigrant restaurant worker deported back to Zimbabwe. (John Terry was supposed to be the victim but he found out after seeing the message in his wife's cellphone explaining the prank. Terry then found Wright-Phillips as a substitute.) Peter Crouch: Crouch is offered an investment deal by an Indian businessman whose Russian business partners later barge in and demand money. Wayne Rooney: Rooney is visiting a dogs' home with his wife Colleen when a little boy's dog dies. David James: James goes to an art gallery and he is accused of breaking a piece of artwork made by a French artist. David Beckham: Beckham is picked up by a driver that takes a detour to make him late for his meeting. |

A play-off place was in sight, there was the chance of a trip to Cardiff, and the lucrative opportunity of promotion to Coca-Cola League One. But with a rookie caretaker manager at the helm, Sky One decided to send them a bit of help. Enter Ron Atkinson. There is little the former Manchester United, Coventry City, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa manager doesn’t know about football after three decades in the game, and he is willing to share his know-how with anybody willing to listen, as he attempts to guide this struggling side through the trials and tribulations of the remaining three months of the season. Big Ron will live and breathe Peterborough United, in a bid to help them land that elusive play-off place. He will patrol the boardroom, corridors and dressing rooms of the club to try and suggest ways of helping turn them into an upwardly mobile League One outfit. With unprecedented access to the club and its staff – on and off the field – this series will be a unique view of what it’s really like to pilot a professional team around the lower leagues in the modern football era of overpaid, oversexed and over-hyped Premier League superstars. |

WHEN BIG RON WENT IFFY | When Big Ron Went Iffy Sky One, 10.00 pm Before Ron Atkinson carried out his troubleshooting stint at Peterborough United, he attempted to do the same last season for Division One strugglers Swindon Town - and it didn’t go well. Looking back now, it’s easy to see why: rookie manager Iffy Onoura didn’t appreciate his presence and made it plain he wanted to do the job on his own (he also felt Atkinson had never apologised properly for his infamous racist comment about Marcel Desailly in 2004). Atkinson felt his input wasn’t taken seriously, though he didn’t exactly help his cause by immediately going on a two-week holiday to Barbados. As the two look back on why it all went wrong, it’s clear poor Swindon was too small a place for two competing egos. No wonder Big Ron departed less than month after he arrived. |

ONCE IN A LIFETIME | In the 1970s the New York Cosmos were a superstar soccer team that attracted thousands of fans to their games, almost raising the sport to the level of football and baseball in America. ONCE IN A LIFETIME charts the Cosmos' spectacular rise and fall. In the 1970s, a group of high-profile businessmen, led by Warner Bros. head Steve Ross and Atlantic Records gurus Ahmet and Nehui Ertegun, decided to bring the world's most popular international sport, soccer, to the United States in a big way. So they gathered their resources, called in favours, and bought the New York Cosmos, part of a fledgling, somewhat pathetic new league. Within a few years they had collected many of the game's greatest players, creating a nearly unstoppable team that were as successful on the field as they were in the gossip pages and such clubs as Studio 54--until their egos got in the way. Paul Crowder and John Dower tell this fascinating story of greed, power, and fame in an entertaining documentary. Crowder and Dower mix in terrific archival footage of the Cosmos with 1970s-era Manhattan and new interviews with many of the primary characters, including Cosmos stars Giorgio Chinaglia (cast as the villain), Carlos Alberto, Franz Beckenbauer, Shep Messing (who talks about posing naked for a women's magazine), soccer lover Henry Kissinger, broadcasters Marv Albert and Paul Gardner, Rodney Marsh, journalist David Hirshey, and many others. Interestingly, Pelé, the man whose multimillion-dollar signing started it all, declined to participate in the project, although he's well represented in the movie. From the patchy field at Randalls Island to packed houses at Giants stadium, ONCE IN A LIFETIME--narrated by Matt Dillon (CRASH)--details the rise and fall of the mighty Cosmos, set to a great 1970s soundtrack that includes songs from Kool and the Gang, Steely Dan, Junior Walker, Donna Summer, the Commodores, and the Main Ingredient, helping make the film a fabulous document of a crazy time. |

Hillsborough Remembered | To mark the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough stadium disaster, the HISTORY Channel will be paying tribute by presenting a testimonial film to the people of Liverpool and football fans across the land. On 15th April 1989, Liverpool faced Nottingham Forest in the semi-final of the FA Cup at Hillsborough stadium, Sheffield. Yet in what was to become Britain’s worst-ever sporting disaster, 96 people died, crushed to death on overcrowded terraces. The events at Hillsborough shattered a community and shook the world of football to its very core. A public inquiry by Lord Justice Taylor concluded that the main cause of the disaster was “failure of police control”. In this incredibly moving tribute, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish and various other Liverpool players from the day, speak about the events at Hillsborough on camera for the very first time. He joins families who lost loved ones, survivors, and players as they discuss what happened on that fateful day. |
